One Month Challenge, Day 13

This month, Zen Habits is taking up the One Month Challenge and I will be tracking all of my expenses and logging them throughout the month of February.

Day 13 of my One Month Challenge has passed. Here's how it turned out:

  • Item: Groceries; Cost: $50.77; Essential? Yes
  • Item: Gas; Cost: $40; Essential? Yes
  • Item: Soccer registration; Cost: $70; Essential? Yes
Running total after 13 days is $1,394.73 ($1,268.58 essential - 91%).

I consider my kids' soccer registration essential ... so sue me.

Charting your spending is an interesting idea. I've tried it myself and found that there is really no way you can keep from spending money every day. You pay for internet service (or groceries or gas) on a specific day so you say that you spent an amount equal to the total cost of say, internet service, that day. But, you use the internet service every day of the month so you are actually spending one-thirtieth of the cost of internet service each day.

Hi Ratter ... thanks for the comment ... you make a good point. I should clarify that I'm not trying to chart my spending on a daily basis, but just track it each day and add it up after a month to see where my money is going. I have a fairly good idea already, but this will give me a more accurate figure, and I'll be able to adjust my budget or target certain areas for reduction. It could even be an eye opener -- maybe I'm spending too much on eating out, or sports equipment, I don't know.

Also, I like the challenge of trying to track my spending for a month. I'm enjoying meeting this challenge every day, and posting my results here is just a way of holding myself accountable. I like it so much that I'm even considering doing it for another month.

Thanks again for the comment and for giving me a chance to clarify myself.
