One Month Challenge, Day 18

This month, Zen Habits is taking up the One Month Challenge and I will be tracking all of my expenses and logging them throughout the month of February.

Day 18 of my One Month Challenge has passed. Here's how it turned out:

  • Item: sugar, brown sugar; Cost: $4.45; Essential? Yes
  • Item: Chinese dinner for 9; Cost: $215.50; Essential? No
Running total after 18 days is $2,234.43 ($1,857.01 essential - 83%).

We took my mother-in-law out for her birthday and treated. I don't regret it, but it wasn't one of our best spending days. We don't usually spend this much on eating out though.

You took your mother-in-law out to dinner for her birthday? You value your marriage (and, I assume, your other personal relationships as well), so I'd say that expense WAS essential. And classy, too!

I really enjoy your blog, Leo. Keep up the good work!

Thanks Jethro! I think you're right, but I could argue for a lot of expenses being essential (ice cream for the kids!), so I'm only counting the living expenses as essential (rent, car, gas, groceries, utilities, etc) and all others as being optional. I could live without going out to restaurants, so I have to make that distinction. Your point is well taken tho!
